Doctor Who is a UK sci-fi series shown live on BBC TV with catchup streaming on BBC iPlayer.
The show has become something of a cult classic and follows the adventures Doctor Who, a Time Lord in the form of a humanoid alien. The Doctor explores the universe in a TARDIS, essentially a space ship capable of time travel which appears as an old style British police box.
Dr Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and after an unsuccessful attempt to reboot with a 1996 TV movie; the show eventually relaunched in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor.
Following one series Eccleston stepped aside to be replaced by David Tennant who was hugely popular in the role over a 5 year period. Matt Smith became the Doctor for 3 year before current incumbent Peter Capaldi got the keys to the TARDIS in 2014.
In 2016 the BBC will broadcast a Christmas Special, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio”. Peter Capaldi will return as the Doctor and the1-hour special will also feature Charity Wakefield, Justin Chatwin and Matt Lucas.
