⚽ PSG vs Angers
🇫🇷 Ligue 1
📅 Friday 15 October 2021
⏰ 2000 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
Start your weekend the right way, with some Friday Night Football. The reasons to watch PSG are plentiful. Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verrati, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes combine to make PSG one of the most entertaining teams in Europe. With Gigi Donnarumma in goal and Marquinhos in central defence they also have plenty of ability at the other end of the pitch as well. Their defeat to Rennes came off the back of eight straight wins which propelled the Parisians to a comfortable lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table. They have taken that lead without Messi or Neymar making much of an impact domestically so they will be extremely confident in their ability to regain the title they ceded to Lille last season
Angers are the surprise package in Ligue 1 thus far, sitting fourth after nine games and holding wins over Lyon and Rennes, as well as a draw against Marseille. New manager Gerald Baticle returned to the managerial ranks this past summer after a decade as an assistant at Lyon. He inherited a very strong situation, Angers had spent a decade with Stephane Moulin at the helm, but has quickly built on the excellent work done by his predecessor. Angers are a deemed built on hardwork, with each member of the team making sacrifices for the greater good. They will each have to go the extra mile this weekend.
⚽ Real Sociedad vs Mallorca
🇪🇸 La Liga
📅 Saturday 16 October 2021
⏰ 2000 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ La Liga TV
This isn’t a glamour tie but it’s definitely one worth watching. Real Sociedad have made an excellent start to the season and in Mikel Oyarzabal they have one of the most in-form players in Europe right now. Oyarzabal had a difficult summer, with Spain being inconsistent in the Euros and his own form being patchy throughout the tournament, and then losing out to Brazil in the Gold Medal match at the Olympics. He’s begun this season like a man on a mission, scoring goals, creating chances for others and generally looking a level above every other player he comes up against. Even in the recent internationals, he was outstanding for Spain as they finished as runners up in the Nations League. He’s joined in a potentially outstanding La Real attack by the outstanding Alexander Isak who is primed for a breakout season, and supported by an excellent midfield that includes Mikel Merino and the ever young David Silva.
Mallorca are back in La Liga after a short stint in the Segunda division and are hopeful that this stay in the top flight will last longer than the one year they managed last time up. They’ve made a decent start to the season, and overcame a poor run of three defeats in four games to defeat Levante last time out. Mallorca added some impressive young talent in the summer, signing Matthew Hoppe from Schalke ahead of a host of other clubs who showed interest in the young American, Lee Kang-in who was inexplicably released by Valencia and adding Takefusa Kubo on loan from Real Madrid. All three are huge talents, with Kubo and Lee being particularly highly rated. If those three young stars can find good veins of form this season, and Mallorca can maintain a consistent defence over the season, then they should have quite a comfortable season.
⚽ Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich
📅 Sunday 17 September 2021
⏰ 1430 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming
A table top clash in Germany sees defending Champions Bayern Munich travel to Leverkusen to take on a Bayer team that has been reborn under new manager Gerardo Seoane. Seoane won three straight Swiss titles with Young Boys and was brought to Leverkusen as the club try to finally maximise its potential. Over the past five or so years they have seen a number of elite young talents pass through without the club ever really threatening to win any major silverware. With Florian Wirtz, maybe the biggest German talent of the past 30 years, in their ranks now they have clearly decided that enough is enough. Wirtz, along with Moussa Diaby and Patrick Schick have combined to create a potent attack, and with Amine Adli and Paulinho also available to Seoane they have versatility and depth up front that can cause trouble for just about anyone. They’ve also been solid at the back with Jonathan Tah finally delivering on the promise he showed at Hamburg in his teens. New signing Odlion Kossounou has settled in really well, and it’s worth noting that their best defender, Edmond Tapsoba, is yet to feature this season. No matter how you look at it, this Bayer team are on the rise and in Seoane they may finally have a manager who makes it all work.
Bayern are, as always, loaded with talent. Julian Nagelsmann has reignited the form of both Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane by simply switching them back to their natural wings and playing Gnabry on the right with Sane on the left. Combining with Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski, the foursome make up one of the most lethal attacks anywhere in world football and with Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich in midfield they have the capability to control any game. If there is a weakness to be found in this Bayern team it’s the lack of a natural right back. Benji Pavard and Niklas Sule have filled in there this season but both are better at centre-back. Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernandez should establish themselves as the first choice pairing in the middle this season, and Alphonso Davies has made the left back spot his own. With Manuel Neuer still a top class presence in goal, it really just is that right back position that stops Bayern from being able to field a near perfect starting 11. Nagelsmann has, thus far, refrained from the constant tactical shifting that at times destabilised his RB Leipzig over the past couple of seasons which has benefitted his team, it will be interesting to see if he tries anything other than the 4-2-3-1 against Leverkusen.
⚽ Juventus vs AS Roma
🇮🇹 Serie A
📅 Sunday 17 October 2021
⏰ 1945 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
Juventus and Roma is always a heated clash. This rivalry dates back to the 1980s when Roma felt referees favoured Juventus and took matters into their own hands. Zdenek Zeman stoked the flames in the 90s by claiming Juventus were illegally doping their players. Fabio Capello’s defection from Roma, where he had built a Scudetto winning team, to Juventus where he did the same, caused major tension in the 00s and now we have Jose Mourinho, who gloatingly mocked Juventus as they struggled in the aftermath of Calciopolli, in place as manager of Roma and drawing the ire of Juventus fans who haven’t forgotten the insults he hurled their way when he was Inter Milan manager.
Roma have made the better start to the season and sit in fourth place on 15 points, four points and three league positions ahead of Juventus who really struggled through the first few games of the season under the returning Max Allegri. Mourinho, in an un-Mourinho like move has committed to playing an attacking brand of football since landing in the Italian capital. How long that will last is anybody’s guess but Tammy Abraham has so far combined with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini to form one of the most impressive attacks in the league thus far. It’s a breath of fresh air to see Jose taking the shackles off his team and play a more aggressive style to resembles his first Chelsea team and his Champions League winning Porto team as opposed to the anti-football dross he served up at Manchester United and Tottenham.
Allegri is still getting to grips with his squad at Juventus, a squad that has changed substantially since his first spell at the club. He’s yet to find the right balance but with the talent he has at his disposal few would bet against him striking gold and having Juventus firmly in the title mix by the turn of the year. With Dybala, Chiesa, Kean, Kulusevski, Bernardeschi and Morata in attack, Locatelli, Rabiot, Bentancur and McKennie in midfield and DeLigt, Chiellini and Bonucci as options at centreback, Juventus are well positioned to build another great team. They need fresh blood at fullback, and ideally a new goalkeeper, but they should have more than enough to mount a title challenge if Allegri gets the mix correct.
With these and plenty of other games taking place around Europe this weekend, there’s no shortage of football available if you decide you’d rather not watch Premier League games outside those of your own club, or indeed at all.
