We’ll start with football as usual and run around the major European Leagues.
Arguably the biggest game taking place in Europe this weekend comes from La Liga where the Madrid derby will see 4th placed Real play host to table toppers Atletico. Real, despite decent results, have been very disappointing this season and pressure is building on manager Zinedine Zidane and his underperforming stars. Atleti and Diego Simeone have no such worries and will merely look to pile more pressure on their opposition. With Europe’s best defense, and the tandem of Joao Felix and Luis Suarez working brilliantly together, Atleti have been near flawless in La Liga action this season and sit one point clear of Real Sociedad whilst also having two games in hand. Simeone has his eyes firmly fixed on winning his second league title with Atletico and a win over their hated rivals will go a long way towards keeping them on the right path.
The stand-out game in the Bundesliga sees Union Berlin, currently 6th in the table, take on the might of Bayern Munich. These clubs couldn’t be more different if they actively tried to be. Union represent the hipsters and upstarts, whilst Bayern are the team of the establishment. It’s a battle of David vs Goliath between two teams who play a quality brand of football. Can the Iron Ones overcome Hollywood FC?
It’s a south coast battle that catches the eye in Ligue 1 with Marseille playing host to AS Monaco. Marseille are currently 4th in the table but if they were to win their two games in hand they could jump all the way into 1st place. Monaco sit one place behind them in what is shaping up to be the most competitive Ligue 1 season in a while. Both clubs have made good starts to the season and have ambitions of securing Champions League football. The managerial battle of Andre Villas-Boas and Niko Kovac could be fascinating due to their contrasting styles of play. There’s similarities between the journeys that brought both managers to their current clubs as both have previously overachieved with underdog teams before “failing” at high profile clubs and are still in the process of rebuilding their reputations from the damage done in London and Munich respectively.
There isn’t a stand-out tie in Serie A but Cagliari vs Inter Milan could prove to be an interesting tie. Cagliari have had a disappointing start to the season and sit in 11th place, which Inter are currently second. With Inter having crashed out of the Champions League in midweek, and indeed out of European competition completely as they finished bottom of their group, their sole focus will be on winning the league, and that’s often when Antonio Conte is at his very best. Conte places incredibly high demands on his players and often struggles to find a balancing act between keeping them fresh for both competitions and running them into the ground. With just the league to focus on, expect Inter to challenge for the title all the way to the end of the season. They’ll want a reaction after midweek disappointment, and they need the win to keep pace with neighbours AC Milan at the top of the table.

With the world wanting to see him step into the ring and face Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua must first turn his attention to this Saturday night when he puts his hard earned World titles on the line against the dangerous Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev. Pulev is 28-1 and has faced some stiff competition over the years. A durable fighter, Pulev can take a punch and come back swinging so Joshua will need to be focused and pick his punches well. Pulev’s only defeat came against Wladimir Klitschko, the man Joshua beat to unify the WBA and IBF titles back in 2017. Pulev will argue that he fought Klitschko three years earlier, when he was the most dominant Heavyweight on the planet, but Joshua can still take confidence from the fact that he holds that win over a man who finished his opponent this Saturday.

It’s not just that the UFC as an organisation doesn’t take a break, it seems like individual fighters don’t either! Merely three weeks after successfully defending his UFC Flyweight title at UFC 255 against Alex Perez, Deiveson Figueirdo is once again back in action at UFC 256. This will he will put his title on the line against Brandon Moreno, who also fought on the 255 card. It’s the quickest turn around for a Champion in UFC history. In the co-main event Tony Ferguson returns after his defeat by Justin Gaethje to face the dangerous Charles Oliveira. Oliveira, 29-8, comes into this fight on a seven fight win streak and knows that a win over Ferguson could land him a title shot next years. Ferguson, 25-4, will want to get back to winning ways and force his way back into the title picture.

If Hamilton decides to sit out the race it will once again present an opportunity to the rest of the field to claim a victory to end the season.

Last but definitely not least comes this weekend’s NFL games. As we reach the business end of the season, and the playoffs come into view, some teams are seeing their hopes of a Superbowl appearance evaporate while others are gaining confidence and momentum. Some coaches are talking about contract extensions while others are beginning to consider how many boxes they will need to pack their offices up when the axe falls on them.
Largely due to the monumental under performances of the Eagles and Cowboys, the New York Giants find themselves top of the NFC East rankings despite a record of 5-7. The Giants have done there part in fairness and after a dreadful 1-7 start they are currently riding a four game winning streak despite losing star running back Saquon Barkley. This weekend they face the Arizona Cardinals, currently sitting third in the NFC West with a 6-6 record. The Cardinals have lost their last three games and Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury is starting to come under pressure. Can he inspire his team to turn their season in the right direction, or will the Giants continue to roll?
The late game on Sunday night is unquestionably the best game of the weekend as the 9-3 Buffalo Bills take on the 11-1 Pittsburgh Steelers. After looking like they had a real shot at going 16-0 through the regular season, the Steelers somehow managed to lose to the dreadful Washington Professional Football Team last weekend. In someone ways it could help the Steelers as they no longer have the pressure of being unbeaten and can now focus solely on getting to the Superbowl. They’ll face a very tough game this weekend against an in-form Bills team looking to claim their first AFC East title since 1995. While both teams play great defence, this game will likely come down to which quarterback has the better game. Can the veteran gunslinger Ben Roethlisberger continue his remarkable season or will it be young upstart Josh Allen who comes out on top?
To complete your weekend, Monday Night Football offers us the Cleveland Browns against the Baltimore Ravens in a crucial AFC North encounter. The 9-3 Browns have won four in a row and a fifth win will likely spell the end of the 7-5 Ravens hopes of making the playoffs this season. The Ravens were many people’s pre-season picks to win out in the AFC and make the Superbowl but have been largely disappointing and Head Coach John Harbough’s position is under question for likely the first time in his 12 year tenure. Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson has failed to take the step forward he was expected to and the Ravens offence has become very predictable. The Browns offence is probably the most predictable in the league, but also one of the most difficult to stop. With a monstrous offensive line shoving people out of the way the game plan is simple, hand the ball to Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt over and over again and let them work. The tandem running backs are both on course to have 1000 seasons. Chubb is 201 yards shy of that marker and Hunt needs 261. Given their production and some of the games they have coming after the Ravens, the pair could become the first backfield duo to achieve the milestone since 2009. The last pair of teammates to manage it, funnily enough, were Jackson and Mark Ingram for the Ravens last season. This game will be decided on the ground.
And that’s that. It’s a pretty packed schedule, with really good offerings from all corners. No matter what your sporting preferences are, there’s something on for you this weekend. Settle into your favourite armchair, order up a take-away, switch on your Liberty Shield VPN and enjoy the action while keeping your data safe.
