Starting with football, there’s a hipster classic in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart vs Leipzig on the slate. Leipzig sit third, only two points off top and are still basking in the glory of having knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League, whilst newly promoted Stuttgart are currently 7th and have played some exciting, attacking football this season and highlighted some of their excellent summer recruitment.
In La Liga, it’s time for one of the fiercest rivalries in Europe to take centre stage as Real Betis take on Sevilla. Both sides have suffered from inconsistencies this season but these games are always hard fought and entertaining.
The game of the weekend in Serie A sees two of Europe’s most entertaining sides, Atalanta and Sassuolo, come face to face in a game that promises goals and probably some bad defending as well. Atalanta have had a disappointing season so far and there is tension behind the scenes following a fallout between captain Papu Gomez and manager Gian Piero Gasperini. Gomez looks set to leave the club in January and has promised to reveal “the truth” about the situation.

New Zealand won the first test and will be looking for the sweep. On Sunday, South Africa and Sri Lanka will also start the second and final test of their series, and South Africa will be looking for a repeat of their first test showing, where they ran out comfortable winners with an innings to spare.

It’s another lowkey weekend in the Boxing world with just one fight of note taking place as 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Luke Campbell, 20-3, takes on one of the most exciting young fighters in the world, Ryan Garcia (20-0) for the interim WBC Lightweight title on Saturday night. Garcia, nicknamed The Flash, is only 22 and has already shown real superstar potential in his young career. He’s a very exciting fighter with a great amateur background, and real knockout power and will represent a massive test for Campbell, who returns to the ring after an 18 month absence following his defeat to Vasyl Lomachenko.

The William Hill Darts World Championship is down to the final stages, with the final set for Sunday. Michael Van Gerwen is still looking a safe bet to win his fourth World title, but had to overcome a big scare against Joe Cullen in the fourth round.

The NBA is in full swing, with games spread across the weekend. Whilst it’s still very early in the season, it’s clear to see which teams have improved from last season and which teams have fallen off. The pick of the games on each night is as follows:
- Friday: Mavericks vs Heat, Jazz vs Clippers, Warriors vs TrailBlazers
- Saturday: Pacers vs Knicks, Pelicans vs Raptors
- Sunday: Suns vs Clippers, Warriors vs TrailBlazers

Last but definitely not least comes this weekend’s NFL games. Sunday is the last weekend of the regular season, and there are still countless playoff connotations that need to be sorted out.
First up, the Buffalo Bills vs the Miami Dolphins in an AFC East clash. The Bills have clinched the division, ending the New England Patriots stranglehold and will be one of the favourites to win the SuperBowl when the play-offs begin, though all AFC roads to the SuperBowl in Tampa likely lead through Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes. The Bills are on a five game win streak and look very strong on both sides of the football. The Dolphins sit on the play-off bubble knowing that a win sees them make it, but that a defeat doesn’t necessarily eliminate them. Given how early in their rebuild they are, it’s a great accomplishment for the Dolphins to be in this position, and with a top 5 pick in next years draft courtesy of the Houston Texans, they really are one of the teams on the up in the NFL. Well coached, with plenty of young talent on both sides of the ball and, they hope, a franchise quarterback in hand in rookie Tua Tagovailoa, the future is bright in Miami regardless of the outcome on Sunday.
Next up, the LA Rams vs the Arizona Cardinals in an NFC West match-up that also has playoff implications. The Rams are in, but the Cardinals need a win and then they need other results to go their way elsewhere on Sunday. The Rams will want to put in a strong showing after an up and down season but will be without quarterback Jared Goff who has a broken thumb. Kyler Murray and the Cardinals have been disappointing overall having been expected by some to win the division after the acquisition of “Nuke” Hopkins in the off-season. Unfortunately for the Cards, they haven’t been able to give Murray and Hopkins enough support, or good enough coaching. Kliff Kingsbury likely needs to make the playoffs to save his job, and that’s a big ask when going up against Sean McVey, Aaron Donald and the Rams.
Last up is the Philadelphia Eagles vs the Washington Professional Football Team in a game where one team really wants to win, and the other really should want to lose! Washington know that a win sees them clinch the saddest division in football and advance to the playoffs, but that a defeat opens the door for the Cowboys to sneak past them. The Eagles have nothing to play for and a defeat could help them get a better slot in the draft. The Carson Wentz era in Philadelphia, the age of Wentzylvania, has come to an end and the Eagles need to figure out how to rid themselves of the quarterback, as well as making decisions over their Head Coach and General Manager. Washington also have a lot of questions to answer, they need a proper name for starters, and they need to decide what their plan at quarterback is. Dwayne Haskins, a first round pick who had largely been disappointing in his tenure, was released last weekend after deciding that going to a strip club during a pandemic was a good idea. In truth, no team from the NFC East should make the playoffs but if one has to then Washington are the least offensive on the eye and they do have some star players on defense, in particular defensive end Chase Young who has had a fantastic rookie season.
And that’s that. It’s a lighter than normal schedule of sport, but there good offerings from across a wide range of disciplines. No matter what you’re sporting preferences are, there should be something on for you this weekend. Settle into your favourite armchair, grab your Christmas leftovers, switch on your Liberty Shield VPN and enjoy the action while keeping your data safe.
