Most of the teams only have three left to play as the season reaches its climax. Premier League matches are shown by pay-TV broadcasters Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and with match highlights available free on BBC Sport with Match of the Day. Need a Premier League VPN?
After chaos descending over the Premier League on two of the last three Sundays on which games were played, we can only hope for a nice dull weekend this time around as Matchweek 35 takes place and the nitty gets separated from the gritty. There are European spots to play for. There are still two relegation spots that haven’t been officially filled. And there is the small matter of crowning a new Premier League Champion. The relegation and Champion parts are largely a formality at this point, but that’s beside the point. Fun Fact: Premier League VPN is one of the most searched phrases on Google.
There are ten Premier League matches this weekend and we thought we’d take a look at three of the most interesting to get you in the mood.
⚽ Leeds vs Tottenham
📅 Saturday 8 May 2021
⏰ 1230 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ BT Sport Live Streaming
What should have been Bielsa vs Mourinho will instead be Bielsa vs Ryan Mason, which isn’t nearly as much fun. But Spurs will be trying to become the first of the “Big Six” to win at Elland Road this season, while Leeds will seek revenge against the team that beat them 3-0 back in early January.
Leeds have been included in this preview more times that any other team this season, because outside of Manchester City they are the most enjoyable team to watch in the Premier League. That “Bielsa-Ball” has been so successful in England is validation for many who championed him over the years while the establishment looked down on his lack of silverware and told us to keep enjoying Roy Hodgson, Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis. What Leeds have done this season is proof that newly promoted teams can afford to dream of Premier League security if they are ambitious and aggressive, and stick to their guns. There’s very few things worse than seeing a team get promoted playing brave attacking football, and then revert to agricultural stuff once they reach the big show. Bielsa was never going to do that, and here’s hoping others follow his lead in the coming years.
Leeds will be without their two best players in Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, while Adam Forshaw is still ruled out. Helder Costa will have a late fitness test, while Liam Cooper returns from suspension.
Very few teams have been as disappointing as Spurs this season, as shown by the sacking of Mourinho and the incessant rumours that Harry Kane wants to leave the club in search of silverware elsewhere. With the squad they have and the money that has been spent over the past two summers, it’s clear that Tottenham should be a top four team. They still have a chance to qualify for next season’s Champions League but they will likely need to win their last four games to make that happen. It makes this game a must win for the Londoners, a big ask against a Leeds team who have done brilliantly against the top sides on their home patch this season. Spurs will be hoping that Gareth Bale’s hat-trick against Sheffield United sparks a good end of season run for him, and the rest of the team.
Just the one absentee for Tottenham, with Ben Davies ruled out with a calf problem.
⚽ Manchester City vs Chelsea
📅 Saturday 8 May 2021
⏰ 1730 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming
This game will serve as a dry run for the 2021 Champions League final, which these two teams qualified for this week by overcoming PSG and Real Madrid respectively. It’s also a repeat of the FA Cup semi-final, in which Chelsea beat City and ruined their hopes of a historic quadruple.
City will clinch the title with victory over Chelsea and that, along with a likely desire for some revenge for the semi-final defeat and ruined quadruple hopes, will likely give their players added motivation ahead of this game. Win, and they can coast the rest of the way to the Champions League final, resting players en masse and enabling Pep Guardiola to ensure that he doesn’t lose anybody to avoidable injuries before the biggest game in club history. Guardiola will also want to ensure that Thomas Tuchel doesn’t get back to back wins over him and build his own confidence ahead of the Champions League final.
Aside from the suspended John Stones, City have no absentees this weekend and will be able to pick a full strength team.
Off the back of a brilliant victory over Real Madrid, Thomas Tuchel has proven just how right Roman Abramovich and his people were to sack Frank Lampard and appoint a proper manager worthy of one of Europe’s finest squads. With two cup finals ahead of them, as well as battling to secure a top four finish, Chelsea face a hectic end to the season but every club in England bar City would happily trade places with them. Every match will matter from here on for the London side, they really can’t afford any slip ups with West Ham and Liverpool having easier run ins than them. With Kai Havertz finally settled in, and flourishing as a false 9, and Timo Werner beginning to put it all together in terms of his movement and build up play, they are starting to look far more of a threat in front of goal which provides Tuchel with the balance he has been seeking after he quickly sorted out Chelsea’s leaky defence.
Mateo Kovacic is on his way back from injury but this game likely comes too soon for him.
⚽ West Ham vs Everton
📅 Sunday 9 May 2021
⏰ 1630 UK Kick-Off
🖥️ Sky Sports Live Streaming
The David Moyes Derby! Sunday’s marquee game sees Champions League challengers West Ham United, under the presumptive Manager of the Year, welcoming the side with whom he enjoyed his greatest successes to the London Stadium.
The Hammers, currently fifth in the table, overcame Burnley on Monday night after falling a goal behind. The return of Michail Antonio could not have come at a better time after back to back defeats at the hands of Newcastle and Chelsea cost them their spot in the top four. With a favourable run in ahead of them, they still have a very good chance of landing a Champions League spot for next season but at the very least they should secure Europa League football. With Jesse Lingard in good form since joining, Pablo Fornals having his best season as a Hammer, and Said Benrahma showing flashes of why West Ham bought him, Moyes’ men will be a big threat to the Toffees.
Declan Rice remains out and his return before the end of the season is doubtful. Arthur Masuaka and Mark Noble are ruled out for this one but Angelo Ogbonna could return if he passes a fitness test.
Everton fans are likely to be very frustrated that a season which promised so much has produced so little in the end. Currently 8th in the table, they are likely look at Europa Conference League football or nothing at all in terms of European competition. With just one win in their last seven games, previously held hopes of Champions League football are now gone. Injuries have massively hampered Everton’s season with James, Allan, Digne, Doucoure and Calvert-Lewin all missing time through injuries. While Everton’s potential best 11 is quite strong, they do lack depth in key positions so they will be aware that they have a lot of work to do this summer in terms of strengthening their squad. They have a chance to get a big win here on Sunday, failure to do so will likely mean no European football next season which will affect those recruitment plans.
Doucoure and Gbamin will both miss out this weekend but James may well be available after missing the Villa game last weekend.
These are just some of the games available to you this weekend. With so many games to choose from, the worry is wasting time on the wrong game. We’ll try and guide you in the right direction so that all you need to do is sit back, turn on your Liberty Shield VPN, settle in, and enjoy the games.
