The X Factor is broadcast live on ITV in the UK, with catchup on ITV Hub. Available simulcast on UTV in Northern Ireland, STV in Scotland and TV3 in Ireland.
A British reality television music competition, The X Factor aims to find new singing talent, contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. Created by Simon Cowell, the show began in 2004 and has since aired annually from August/September until December.
The series consists of auditions, bootcamp, judges’ houses, several weeks of live shows, semi-finals and the final. The series has a spin-off behind-the-scenes show called The Xtra Factor, which airs directly after the main show on ITV2.
The X Factor 2017 returned to our screen on September 17 at 8pm on ITV and saw the return of Dermot O’Leary as host with Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger as the judges. It’s the first time in seven years that X Factor bosses have kept the same judging panel as the year before.
Simon Cowell is making a whole host of changes this year to try and pull in more viewers. The live weekend shows will be cut from ten to six with acts voted off on both Saturdays and Sundays meaning “tedious” performance-only Saturday episodes, which got low ratings, will be axed. Star guest artists will perform on both days and auditions will be held at Thorpe Park in the hope that fun theme park footage will win viewers. Cowell will also discourage novelty acts like Honey G, who came fifth last year as audience figures hit an all-time low and the show was thrashed by BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing.
There have been 13 winners of the show to date: Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson, Alexandra Burke, Joe McElderry, Matt Cardle, Little Mix, James Arthur, Sam Bailey, Ben Haenow, Louisa Johnson and Matt Terry.
Separate global editions of The X Factor have been broadcast in USA (until 2013) and Australia (ongoing).
